How the split works
The calculator adds the tip percentage to the bill and divides the total evenly. On an $86.40 bill with 18% tip split four ways, each person pays $25.49.
Common tipping levels
In the US, 15–20% is customary at sit-down restaurants, with 18% a common default. Elsewhere norms differ widely — in much of Europe and Asia a service charge is already included, so check the bill first.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal tip in the US?
15–20% of the pre-tax bill at sit-down restaurants; 18% is a safe default for good service.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention is the pre-tax amount, though many people simply tip on the total for simplicity.
